ESSN Arrests Two Suspects With Large Cache of Illicit Drugs in Edo

The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the sale and distribution of illicit drugs in Benin City, as part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of drug-related crimes.

The suspects, identified as Efosa Uyi and Stella Thompson, were apprehended at separate locations within Benin City. According to security officials, the suspects were found in possession of large quantities of substances believed to be cannabis and other hard drugs.

Items recovered during the operation include Indian hemp, crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as Ice), Colorado, Canadian Loud and Scottish Loud. The substances were reportedly seized in significant quantities.

Speaking to journalists, the Edo State Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Festus Ebea, said the arrests underscore the government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse across the state.

Ebea disclosed that the suspects would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

“We have arrested two suspects at different locations in Benin City and will hand them over to the NDLEA. We are working closely with the agency to rid the state of individuals engaged in drug-related activities,” he said.

He noted that the suspects were arrested on May 29, 2026, and warned drug dealers and traffickers to desist from operating in Edo State.

“We are not relenting in our efforts to comb every part of the state to identify and apprehend drug dealers and users. Edo State is not a safe haven for criminal elements involved in illicit drug activities,” he added.

The commissioner also appealed to young people to avoid drug abuse, stressing that narcotics have devastating effects on individuals and society.

“To safeguard our youths from the dangers of drug abuse, we must continue to arrest and prosecute those involved in the sale and distribution of these substances. Drug abuse destroys lives and contributes significantly to criminal activities,” Ebea stated.

He further called on members of the media to monitor the prosecution process to ensure justice is served and to reinforce public awareness about the dangers of illicit drugs.

According to him, many criminal activities are linked to substance abuse, making the fight against drugs a critical component of the state’s security strategy.
