Edo Government Reiterates Ban on Cultism, Warns Against Electoral Violence

The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its uncompromising stance against cultism and cult-related activities across the state, warning individuals and groups against using the ongoing primary election season as a cover for violence, intimidation, or criminal conduct.

In a statement issued on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government expressed concern over the potential rise in politically motivated cult activities during the primary election period, stressing that no political interest or group would be allowed to exploit the democratic process to perpetrate lawlessness.

The government maintained that the ban on cultism in Edo State remains total and non-negotiable, warning that anyone found engaging in cult-related activities or electoral violence, regardless of political affiliation or social status, would face the full weight of the law.

According to the statement, the administration remains committed to safeguarding the security of lives and property as well as protecting the integrity of democratic processes in the state. It added that the government’s SHINE Agenda places security at the centre of governance and civic protection.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and other relevant security formations, have been placed on heightened alert and directed to respond swiftly to any incidents of cult activity, electoral intimidation, or violence across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The government further warned that the primary election process would be closely monitored, noting that any attempt to deploy cult groups against political opponents, communities, or innocent citizens would be treated as a criminal offence and prosecuted accordingly.

Residents were also urged to report suspicious movements, threats, or acts of violence to the nearest security agency or through government emergency channels, with assurances that whistle-blowers and informants would be protected.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful elections, the government stated that Edo State would not allow criminal elements hiding under cult groups to undermine democracy or threaten public peace.

The statement also called on political parties, candidates, delegates, traditional rulers, youth groups, and other stakeholders to promote peaceful political participation and reject cultism and electoral violence in all forms.

The statement was signed by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo.
