Edo Governor increase Varsity Subversion to ₦250m a Boost for Education
Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved a ₦2 billion grant for infrastructural development at Edo State University Iyamho and increased its monthly subvention from ₦100 million to ₦250 million.
The announcement was made on Monday during the commissioning of the Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library and the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre and the university’s Health Centre.
Okpebholo described the interventions as part of his administration’s deliberate policy to reposition the education sector and enhance learning conditions across the state. He noted that the newly inaugurated and proposed facilities symbolise progress, collaboration, and a shared commitment to academic and health development.
The governor commended Chief Ehi Aganmonmen for donating computers and furniture for the e-library, stressing that the contribution would significantly strengthen digital learning and academic excellence. He also praised Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia for supporting the development of the fitness centre, describing it as a strategic investment in student wellbeing.
Acknowledging other stakeholders, Okpebholo cited the sacrifice of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetimirin, who donated one month’s salary, as well as a parent who volunteered to sponsor architectural designs for the projects. He said such gestures underscore the need for stronger partnerships between government and the private sector.
Reaffirming his administration’s support for improved healthcare infrastructure, the governor endorsed the university’s plan to replace its sick bay with a standard health centre, assuring continued government backing.
He charged students to make responsible use of the facilities and urged the management to ensure proper maintenance and sustainability, noting that the investments are geared toward securing the future of the institution.
The governor also commissioned projects at Auchi Polytechnic, including an ICT hall, administrative blocks and a sporting arena, sponsored by Dunia.
Dignitaries at the event included Adams Oshiomhole, Secretary to the State Government Barr. Musa Ikhilor, Chief of Staff Hon. Yakubu Musa, and former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, among other senior government officials.
The ceremony marks another step in the state government’s drive to position Edo as a hub for academic excellence and innovation under its SHINE development agenda.
