My Administration is Working to Decentralized Power in Edo -Gov. Okpebholo
Uromi- Rhe Executive Governor of Edo State Sen. Monday Okpebholo has unveiled a bold strategy to decentralize electricity supply in Edo State, declaring that his administration is putting in place measures to improve power efficiency and reduce the state’s dependence on the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).
The governor made this known at the 52nd Annual Convention of the Uromi Community Association of Nigeria (UCAN), held at Uromi City Hall in Esan North-East Local Government Area.
Okpebholo lamented the persistent challenge of unstable electricity supply, noting that the situation has adversely impacted businesses and livelihoods across the state. He emphasized that addressing the power deficit remains central to his administration’s development agenda.
“We are committed to fixing electricity in Edo State. We have already flagged off a 100MW power project in Benin City, and plans are underway to replicate the same in Edo Central. This will decentralize power and ensure that communities across Edo, including Afemai and Edo Central, enjoy improved electricity supply,” he said.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to equitable development across the three senatorial districts, stressing that ongoing projects are designed to improve the quality of life for all residents.
“I am in office to serve Edo people. Every part of the state will feel the impact of governance through strategic developmental projects,” he added.
Highlighting progress in the energy sector, Okpebholo referenced the groundbreaking of a 100MW power generating plant alongside a 300 metric tons per day LNG facility at Taihu Industrial Park in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. He disclosed that similar initiatives are being planned for Edo Central to further strengthen the state’s power infrastructure.
The governor also linked the achievements of his administration to the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence that Edo State would deliver 2.5 million votes for the president in the 2027 general election.
In his remarks, the Ojuromi of Uromi, HRH Anselm Edenojie II, commended the governor’s efforts but drew attention to critical infrastructure gaps in Edo Central. He specifically urged the state government to revive the abandoned Ahojie Township Stadium project.
“A functional stadium will promote youth engagement, develop sporting talent, stimulate economic activities, and foster community pride,” the monarch said.
Responding, the governor assured that his administration would look into the concerns raised, reaffirming his resolve to complete ongoing projects and initiate new ones that would drive growth across the state.
Okpebholo also criticized the immediate past administration led by Godwin Obaseki, accusing it of commissioning uncompleted projects. He cited the Stella Obasanjo Hospital as an example, noting that significant resources are currently being deployed by his government to complete the facility.
The governor maintained that his administration remains focused on delivering tangible results, particularly in critical sectors such as power, infrastructure, and economic development.
The press release is signed by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Edo State.
