Honouring Sacrifice: Diaspora Group Urges FG to Reward Selfless Nigerians
A Nigerian diaspora group, The International Watchers, has called on the Federal Government to establish structured national honours and recognition frameworks for citizens who demonstrate exceptional personal sacrifice in the interest of national unity and humanitarian service.
In a statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Olusegun Adebola, the group said Nigeria must deliberately reward selflessness to inspire a renewed wave of patriotism, particularly among Nigerians in the diaspora.
The group cited the example of Allen Onyenma, noting that his commitment to humanitarian service predates his rise in business. According to the statement, his early efforts in promoting national cohesion through the Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria reflect a mindset anchored on unity and service above personal gain.
Dr. Adebola stressed that individuals who sacrifice their comfort, resources, and time for the collective good deserve more than verbal commendation. He argued that formalised national recognition would send a strong signal about the values Nigeria seeks to promote.
“Recognising such contributions at the highest level will not only validate those already making sacrifices but also motivate others, especially Nigerians abroad, to channel their resources and expertise into nation-building,” he said.
The statement further observed that many Nigerians in the diaspora possess both the capacity and willingness to contribute meaningfully to national development but are often discouraged by the absence of visible appreciation and institutional support.
According to Adebola, Nigeria must shift its value system from celebrating wealth alone to honouring sacrifice and service. He noted that doing so would help reshape societal priorities and foster a culture of responsibility and patriotism.
The group also urged the Federal Government to complement recognition initiatives with practical incentives, including policies that protect and support socially driven local enterprises.
Dr. Adebola warned that continued neglect or frustration of well-intentioned individuals and organisations could deter others from following similar paths, ultimately weakening national development efforts.
The International Watchers maintained that nations that reward service and sacrifice are better positioned to harness the goodwill of their citizens, both at home and abroad. It emphasised that national honours, if strategically deployed, can serve as a powerful tool for mobilising patriotism, strengthening unity, and deepening diaspora engagement.
