Gov. Okpebholo Flags Off 2026 Farming Season, Distributes Inputs to Farmers
Benin City- Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has flagged off the 2026 farming season with the distribution of agricultural inputs and equipment to farmers across the 18 local government areas of the state.
The event, held at the Agricultural Hub on Oko-Ogba Road in Benin City, marked the second phase of the administration’s “Back to Farm” initiative. It attracted farmers and stakeholders who showcased a variety of farm produce, highlighting the state’s agricultural potential.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, Esq., the governor said the administration remains committed to strengthening agriculture to boost food production and ensure food security.
He reiterated government’s resolve to sustain increased funding for the sector and implement programmes aimed at supporting farmers across the state, noting that agriculture remains a key pillar of the administration’s SHINE agenda.
“It is encouraging to see the passion of Edo people for farming. Agriculture is fundamental to human survival and will continue to thrive as long as there is a need for food,” he said.
Okpebholo noted that upon assumption of office on November 12, 2024, a significant allocation was made to agriculture in the state budget, underscoring his administration’s commitment to the sector.
He also highlighted his visit to the Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement, describing it as a demonstration of direct engagement with farmers and a commitment to practical governance.
The governor stressed the need to ensure that government support reaches genuine farmers. “We must be deliberate in dealing with real farmers, not political farmers. This administration is committed to transparency in the distribution of agricultural inputs,” he said.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Jerry Uwangue, described the programme as a strategic step towards sustainable agricultural development.
According to him, the initiative is designed to promote timely farming practices, adoption of improved technologies, and effective use of modern inputs such as improved seedlings, fertilisers, agrochemicals, and mechanised equipment.
A guest lecturer, Mr. Sunny Eronseyi, delivered a paper titled “Strengthening Agricultural Systems for Food Security in Edo State,” where he outlined strategies to enhance productivity and sustainability in the sector.
Some beneficiaries, including Uwensuyi Monday, Godfrey Omoruyi and Henry Ebole, commended the state government for the intervention and appealed for continued support to ensure a successful planting season.
Items distributed at the event included fertilisers, agrochemicals, protective gear, knapsack sprayers, fish processing equipment, gas cylinders, and other farming implements.
