Edo Governor Okpebholo Moves to Strengthen Workers, Pensioners’ Welfare

Benin City-The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of workers and pensioners, with assurances of prompt payment of entitlements and sustained support for retirees.

Governor Monday Okpebholo gave the assurance on Friday while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) during a courtesy visit at Government House, Benin City.

Addressing the delegation, the governor stressed that his administration remains focused on ensuring the timely payment of pensions and enhancing the overall wellbeing of retirees. He noted that pensioners, having devoted their productive years to the service of the state, deserve dignity, respect and regular access to their entitlements.

As part of efforts to address concerns raised by the unions, the governor announced the constitution of a committee to review their demands. The committee will be chaired by the Head of Service, Anthony Okumgbowa, and includes the Commissioner for Finance, Emmanuel Okoebor, the Accountant-General, and the Permanent Secretary, Pension Bureau.

In addition, the governor pledged to provide a bus for the union to ease mobility, describing the gesture as part of broader efforts to support senior citizens in the state.

Engaging directly with the pensioners, the governor sought feedback on the status of pension payments, reiterating his administration’s resolve to ensure that the state remains up to date in meeting its obligations.

“Tell me sincerely, is Edo State still owing you pensions? As far as this administration is concerned, we are committed to prompt payment. Our goal is to ensure that no retiree is left behind or subjected to hardship after years of service,” he said.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the NUP, Sir Samuel Okhuelegbe, commended the government for steps taken to improve pensioners’ welfare, particularly the regular payment of pensions.

He, however, highlighted ongoing challenges, including the non-payment of gratuities to both state and local government retirees, as well as outstanding arrears owed to some pensioners.

The union also expressed appreciation for key interventions by the state government, including the introduction of a 13th month bonus and the enrolment of pensioners into the state’s free health insurance scheme.

Reaffirming his administration’s position, the governor stated that policies aimed at improving the welfare of workers and retirees would remain a priority, noting that a motivated workforce and a secure retired population are critical to sustainable development.

The Press release is singed and made available to the media by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Edo State.
