Governor Okpebholo Reaffirms Commitment to Child Protection at 2026 Children’s Day Celebration
Benin City-The Edo State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding children’s rights, advancing quality education, and strengthening sports development across the State.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, gave the assurance on Wednesday during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration and Governor’s Cup finale held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
Addressing pupils, students, teachers, parents, school administrators, sports officials, and other guests, the Governor described children as the pride of Edo State and the hope of the nation. He noted that Children’s Day provides an important opportunity to celebrate the dreams, talents, and potential of young people.
Speaking on the theme of the 2026 celebration, “Choose Kindness, Reject Bullying,” the Governor said the message was both timely and critical, stressing the need for safe, tolerant, and inclusive environments in schools and communities.

He condemned all forms of bullying — physical, verbal, emotional, and online — stating that such behaviour has no place in any civilized society. He added that his administration remains committed to protecting the dignity and rights of every child in Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed that the government will continue to strengthen policies and programmes that promote discipline, mutual respect, child protection, and positive learning environments across schools.
He urged children to embrace kindness, compassion, teamwork, and respect for one another, noting that true strength is rooted in empathy, good character, and mutual understanding.
The Governor also commended teachers, parents, caregivers, and school administrators for their vital role in nurturing children academically, morally, and emotionally. He called for collective efforts in raising a generation grounded in peace, unity, discipline, tolerance, and excellence.
Highlighting the significance of the Governor’s Cup finale and other sporting events held during the celebration — including march-past parades and athletics competitions — the Governor emphasized that sports remain a powerful tool for youth development, leadership, discipline, and social integration.
He congratulated all participating schools and athletes for their resilience, commitment, and sportsmanship throughout the competition, urging finalists to uphold the ideals of fair play and discipline.
Governor Okpebholo further assured that his administration will continue to invest in education, sports development, youth empowerment, and child welfare, adding that sustainable development is only achievable through deliberate investment in children and young people.
He encouraged children across the State to remain focused on their studies, shun violence and negative influences, respect their parents and teachers, and continue to be worthy ambassadors of Edo State.
The 2026 Children’s Day celebration featured cultural performances, athletics events, march-past parades, and the Governor’s Cup football finale, with pupils and students from various schools across the State in attendance.
