The bond between the ancient Benin throne and the Edo State Government was once again brought to the fore on Monday, September 29, 2025, as His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, presented a royal birthday gift to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
The symbolic gesture, which took place at the Governor’s Office in Benin City, was a mark of royal recognition and goodwill from the revered monarch to the state’s chief executive.
Leading the royal delegation was the Oba’s eldest daughter, Princess (Mrs) Iku Aimiuwu Ewuare, accompanied by Mr. Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.
Delivering the Oba’s message, Mr. Irabor explained that the royal visit was a direct instruction from the monarch to honour the governor’s recent birthday with a special gift.
He said, “Your Excellency, we are here this afternoon on the instruction of His Majesty, the great Oba of Benin Kingdom, to present to you a royal gift. Princess (Mrs) Iku Aimiuwu Ewuare has been directed by the Omo N’Oba to hand over this present as a token of His Majesty’s goodwill and prayers.”
Princess Aimiuwu, who performed the official presentation, extended the monarch’s blessings and heartfelt wishes to the governor.
“I am pleased to be here today on behalf of my father to present this wonderful birthday gift to celebrate your birthday. Happy birthday again, Your Excellency. We wish you long life and prosperity,” she said.
Visibly touched by the gesture, Governor Okpebholo expressed deep appreciation to the Oba of Benin, describing the honour as profoundly humbling and spiritually uplifting.
In his response, the governor said:
“I am short of words as my father, the Oba of Benin, is sending me a gift. I am so delighted and honoured. There is an adage in my community that says, ‘If you wash your hands well, you can eat with the elders.’ That is what I am seeing today. This recognition is one I will not take for granted.
Tell the Oba, my father, that we are his children, and we are committed to him and the development of Edo State. His prayers are working. We will always speak truthfully and act sincerely. His blessings upon us and the people of Edo State are manifesting, and we are grateful.”
The governor further reaffirmed his administration’s loyalty and respect for the Benin Kingdom and its traditional institutions, emphasizing the role of the monarchy in promoting peace, unity, and development across Edo State.
The event, steeped in cultural significance, underscored the enduring influence of the Benin throne in state affairs and reflected the governor’s continued reverence for traditional values and leadership.
The press release was singed by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
