The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of one of Nigeria’s most revered law enforcement icons, former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Parry Benjamin Osayande, CFR.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued on Sunday, Governor Okpebholo described the late DIG Osayande as “a towering figure of integrity, discipline, and patriotism,” whose life epitomized service to community and nation.
“Our State has lost a giant,” the Governor said. “DIG Osayande was a man of impeccable character, a professional to the core, and a patriot whose contributions to the peace and security of Nigeria, especially during the era of the defunct Bendel State and the present Edo State, remain indelible.”
Governor Okpebholo recalled the late DIG’s legendary exploits as Commissioner of Police in the then Bendel State, where he led decisive operations against high-profile criminal gangs in the 1980s. According to him, those courageous efforts became a benchmark for police operational excellence in Nigeria.
Beyond his years in active service, the Governor noted that Osayande’s passion for reforming the Nigeria Police Force remained unwavering. He served in various presidential and police reform committees, where his expertise and vision shaped policy direction and enhanced institutional integrity.
“Even in retirement, DIG Osayande never relented in offering his wisdom and experience for national development,” Okpebholo added. “He was a true son of Edo State, deeply committed to the progress and dignity of his people.”
Governor Okpebholo extended his condolences to the Osayande family, the Benin Kingdom, and the entire Edo people, praying for divine comfort and strength for all who mourn his passing.
“May God grant his soul eternal rest and give his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this great loss,” the statement concluded.
DIG Parry Osayande, CFR, was celebrated for his distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force and his unwavering dedication to public service.
