Paul Okojie

Uromi, Edo State – The serene town of Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State was thrown into mourning following a gruesome attack on travelers by an illegal vigilante group on March 27, 2025. The horrific event, which claimed multiple lives, prompted swift action from the Edo State Government.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, in response to the tragic incident, ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state. In addition, the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadan (Rtd.), was suspended as investigations into the killings commenced.

According to the government’s official statement, the vigilante group responsible for the attack was operating unlawfully, having never been profiled or registered under the Edo State Security Corps. “Its actions do not reflect the core values, character, and principles of the Okpebholo administration,” the statement read, emphasizing that the security framework of the state was built on law and order.

So far, authorities have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the attack, while a special police team, under the directive of the Inspector General of Police, has launched a manhunt for other perpetrators still at large.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of citizens to move freely and conduct business without fear. “We believe in the fundamental freedoms of our people, and we will not allow criminal elements to undermine peace in our state,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has reached out to the families of the victims, as well as community leaders and the Government of Kano State, where most of the deceased reportedly hailed from. Efforts are being made to ensure justice and provide necessary support to the bereaved families.

As tensions remain high, the government has called for calm, assuring the public that justice will be served in a transparent and efficient manner. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unregulated security groups and the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms in Edo State.

For now, the people of Uromi and beyond await the outcome of the investigations, hopeful that the perpetrators of this heinous act will be brought to justice.
