The UK Executive Forum, themed “Edo SHINE 2026: Shining Beyond Borders”, with the Executive Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Special Guest of Honour represents far more than another diaspora engagement. It signals a deliberate effort by the Edo State Governor to reposition the diaspora as a strategic partner in the state’s economic transformation.

As it were for decades, diaspora engagement in many Nigerian states has often revolved around goodwill visits, cultural celebrations and occasional investment appeals. While such engagements have helped sustain emotional ties with home, they have rarely produced structured partnerships capable of driving sustainable development.

For Governor Okpebholo, SHINE 2026 sought to change that narrative. It reflects an emerging governance philosophy that sees Edo professionals and entrepreneurs abroad not simply as ambassadors of the state, but as investors, innovators, mentors and collaborators whose expertise can accelerate development.

This shift comes at an important moment. Around the world, diaspora communities have become powerful contributors to national development through investment, technology transfer, entrepreneurship and knowledge exchange. Beyond remittances, which already contribute significantly to our nation’s economy, the real value lies in the skills, professional networks and international business relationships that diaspora communities possess. Governor Okpebholo is seeking to harness these assets in a more organised and purposeful manner.

The Governor’s SHINE Agenda provides the framework for this lofty ambition. Built around the pillars of Security, Health, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Agriculture, and Education, it is his blueprint, guiding government policy, public spending and development priorities; and not as isolated policy themes! Together, they represent the building blocks of his vision of a productive State economy capable of attracting investment, creating jobs and improving the quality of life for citizens.

As the Governor has articulated severally, Infrastructure is central to this vision. Roads, transportation, energy and urban renewal continue to determine the competitiveness of every modern economy. The state’s ambitious capital investment programme, including new roads, flyovers, drainage systems, rural access routes and agricultural infrastructure, demonstrates an understanding that private investment follows public infrastructure. Investors are naturally drawn to locations where governments show commitment to improving the business environment.

For members of the Edo diaspora with expertise in engineering, construction, project management, renewable energy and infrastructure financing, these projects present opportunities that extend beyond philanthropy. They offer genuine commercial prospects where professional experience acquired overseas can contribute directly to development back home while generating economic returns.

Agriculture is another compelling frontier. Edo State possesses abundant arable land, favourable climatic conditions and growing domestic demand for food and agro-industrial products. The government’s emphasis on ensuring that agricultural support reaches genuine farmers rather than political beneficiaries is intended to build confidence in the sector. At the same time, investments in farm estates, irrigation, processing facilities and rural connectivity are laying the foundation for modern agribusiness.

For diaspora investors with backgrounds in agricultural technology, food processing, export logistics, mechanisation or agribusiness finance, the opportunities are substantial. Beyond primary production lies an entire value chain involving storage, packaging, transportation, processing and international market access. It is within these areas that experience gained in advanced economies can become a powerful catalyst for local economic growth.

Healthcare is equally significant. Plans to expand primary healthcare facilities alongside the development of a specialist hospital underscore the administration’s commitment to improving medical services. However, healthcare today extends far beyond hospital buildings. It encompasses digital health technologies, diagnostics, pharmaceutical supply chains, specialist training, health insurance systems and medical research.

The Edo diaspora includes hundreds of accomplished doctors, nurses, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and healthcare administrators working across the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. SHINE 2026 provides a platform to explore how these professionals can contribute not only through medical missions but through sustainable partnerships, institutional collaboration and investment in healthcare delivery.

Education, too, occupies a central place within Governor Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda. Every successful economy invests in developing its human capital. Expanding access to quality education, strengthening technical and vocational training, promoting digital literacy and improving tertiary education are essential components of preparing young people for an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy.

Diaspora academics, researchers, technology experts and education entrepreneurs have an important role to play in this process. Partnerships between institutions, mentorship programmes, research collaborations and technology-driven learning solutions can help bridge existing gaps while exposing Edo’s young population to global opportunities.

Security, often overlooked in economic discussions, remains fundamental to investment confidence. Businesses thrive where lives and property are protected, institutions function effectively and investors have confidence in the rule of law. Strengthening security therefore becomes an economic imperative as much as a governance responsibility.

Combined with ongoing institutional reforms and structured diaspora engagement, these efforts contribute to creating an environment where investment decisions become easier.
Perhaps one of the most significant features of SHINE 2026 is its format.

Rather than relying solely on speeches and ceremonial presentations, the forum prioritises dialogue. Investors can ask difficult questions. Entrepreneurs can discuss regulatory concerns. Professionals can propose ideas. Government officials can explain policies directly while listening to constructive feedback from stakeholders.

Such conversations matter because successful investment is built on trust, transparency and access to reliable information. Many investment opportunities are lost simply because potential investors cannot obtain clear answers or identify the right institutional contacts. Forums such as SHINE help bridge that information gap while fostering relationships that can mature into long-term partnerships.

Equally valuable is the networking environment the forum creates. Some of the most impactful business ventures begin not in formal boardrooms but through conversations between people who discover shared interests and complementary expertise. Bringing together policymakers, investors, professionals, entrepreneurs and development partners under one roof increases the likelihood of collaborations that may ultimately translate into businesses, jobs and economic growth across Edo State.

The inclusion of cultural performances, music and Edo cuisine also serves an important purpose. Culture is more than entertainment; it is an economic asset. Ultimately, SHINE 2026 is about more than a single event in London. It is about redefining the relationship between Edo State and its global community. It is an invitation to move from sentiment to strategy, from goodwill to partnership, and from conversation to measurable outcomes.

The challenges Governor Okpebholo inherited are real, but so are the opportunities. The government alone cannot deliver the future Edo people desire. Neither can the private sector nor the diaspora acting in isolation. Sustainable development requires collaboration built on shared vision, mutual trust and collective responsibility.

Governor Okpebholo is confident that SHINE 2026 will forge those partnerships, attract new investment and inspire fresh ideas. He knows that his greatest achievement will not be measured by attendance figures or speeches he delivers in London or elsewhere. It will be measured by the lives he improved across Edo State in the years he was Chief Executive. This is the true promise of shining beyond borders.
