Drug Abuse Fuels Cultism, Kidnapping in Edo, Says Okpebholo

By Davidson Ogbebor

BENIN CITY— Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has identified drug abuse as a major factor contributing to cultism, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state, pledging his administration’s continued support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to combat illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The governor made this known on Wednesday when he received a delegation of the NDLEA, led by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), at the Government House, Benin City.

Okpebholo said the fight against drug abuse and trafficking required collective efforts from government, security agencies, communities and members of the public.

He described substance abuse as a serious security concern, linking it to the activities of criminal groups operating across the state.

“Drugs are totally our enemies, and we have to fight them,” the governor said.

He recalled that about 10 persons were reportedly killed in cult-related violence shortly after he assumed office, adding that drug consumption was often associated with the activities of cult groups.

“Within a short time after I took over as governor, we lost about 10 persons to cult-related killings. These guys do not operate without drug intake,” he said.

The governor further alleged that kidnappers sometimes demand drugs as part of ransom arrangements, describing the development as an indication of the connection between substance abuse and organised criminal activities.

He commended the NDLEA for its operations in Edo State and acknowledged the contributions of its personnel in tackling drug-related offences.

Okpebholo assured the agency of his administration’s readiness to strengthen collaboration and provide necessary support for its activities.

“We are ready to partner with you, we are ready to work with you, and we are ready also to support you in whatever request you make,” he said.

Earlier, Marwa commended the Edo State Government for its cooperation with the agency, particularly in drug supply reduction, public awareness and prevention programmes targeting young people.

He disclosed that the NDLEA was strengthening international partnerships to address the growing challenge of illicit drug trafficking.

Marwa described Edo as a strategic gateway state and a major cannabis-producing area, stressing the importance of sustained government support in addressing drug cultivation, trafficking and consumption.

“Drugs are the root of all criminality. We appreciate your laudable steps and support to the NDLEA,” he said.

The NDLEA chairman also commended the governor’s developmental efforts and expressed appreciation for the state government’s commitment to the agency’s activities.

A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of Governor Okpebholo as the NDLEA Grand Patron of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), a campaign designed to promote public awareness and discourage substance abuse.

The visit underscored the need for stronger collaboration between state authorities and law enforcement agencies in addressing drug-related challenges and their implications for public safety.
