BENIN CITY — Over 200 indigent residents of Ologbo Kingdom and other parts of Edo State have received free cataract surgeries through an initiative sponsored by High Chief Johnson Atshelghe, the Iyatsere of Warri Kingdom in his newly built and commissioned hospital in Ologbo community.

The surgeries were performed by a renowned eye-care surgeon , Dr. Okorodudu and his team at Ologbo Hospital Limited, said the exercise began about two weeks ago as part of efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services in the rural community.

The medical team carried out about 150 surgeries for beneficiaries in Ologbo, with another 50 procedures scheduled for indigent residents across Edo State in Benin City.

Speaking to representatives of federated chapel who were on a facility tour in Ologbo hospital Ltd, Dr. Okorodudu described Atshelghe’s investment in Ologbo as an uncommon commitment to grassroots development. He said the hospital was comparable to a specialist healthcare facility.

The surgeon, who described himself as a “bush doctor” because of his long-standing commitment to taking medical services to rural communities, said he had provided healthcare at the grassroots for more than 20 years disclosed that Atshelghe invited him to Ologbo after they met in Warri during the anniversary of the coronation of the Olu of Warri.

“I was truly glad to see somebody who is sensible enough to give back to his people. When I walked through this place, I was amazed. The very best of everything is here,” he said.

Dr. Okorodudu commended Atshelghe for equipping the hospital with modern medical equipment, describing the facility as a “new dawn” for healthcare delivery in Ologbo.

He urged other wealthy Nigerians to invest in healthcare, education and critical infrastructure in their communities, saying such contributions would reduce pressure on the government
