The Edo State House of Assembly’s 8th Assembly witnessed chaotic sessions as members from different parties attempted to assert their influence, creating a tumultuous atmosphere.
As the state Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo,in his request sought to advance his agenda, and needed to secure sufficient support.
This move was part of a broader effort to address the suspension of 18 Local Government Area chairmen and vice chairmen, which had been a contentious issue.
The Speaker waited to garner enough votes to suspend the council leaders, amidst allegations of insubordination, gross misconduct, and corruption.
During the assembly, members engaged in heated debates, with some opposing the motion and advocating for due process.
Despite the opposition, 14 members ultimately voted in favor of the suspension, paving the way for the Governor’s plan to proceed.
The resilience of the 6 members, including the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian, followed the counter motion moved by the Member Representing Ikpoba Okha Constituency Hon. Asonsere Nicholas Friday, which received support from Rt Hon. Maria Edeko kicking against the Request of the Governor.
They cited the provision of Section 10 sub section 1 of the local government law which further provided in section 7 sub section 1& 4 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended as unconstitutional.
