Benin City — Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has settled the medical bills of a pregnant woman and her husband who is receiving treatment for severe fire burns at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.
The governor made the intervention during a visit to the hospital, where he also paid the medical expenses of several other patients admitted in different wards.
Speaking with journalists after the visit, Governor Okpebholo explained that the pregnant woman had initially approached him to seek financial assistance for her husband, who sustained serious burns in a fire incident in Ekpoma.

He said the situation became more urgent when members of his medical team discovered that the woman was due for delivery and immediately arranged for her transfer to the hospital.
Doctors at the hospital subsequently performed a successful cesarean section, leading to the safe delivery of the baby.
“The woman came to seek help for her husband because they were looking for money to pay his hospital bills. When my doctors saw that she was due for delivery, they rushed her to the hospital immediately where she later gave birth through a cesarean operation,” the governor said.

Governor Okpebholo added that the state government had reached an agreement with the hospital management to settle the medical bills of the couple as well as those of other patients receiving treatment in the facility.
“We have agreed with the hospital management to pay their bills and that of other patients we met in the wards so they will not have any reason to worry about payment and their treatment can continue. By the grace of God, we believe the man and others in the Intensive Care Unit will recover quickly,” he added.
The governor noted that the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to supporting Edo residents, particularly those facing medical emergencies and financial hardship.
Patients and relatives who benefited from the intervention expressed appreciation to the governor, describing the gesture as timely relief amid the rising cost of medical care.
The press release is signed and made available to the media by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Edo State.
