Okpebholo Celebrates Cardinal Okogie at 59 Years of Priesthood
Benin City- The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has congratulated His Eminence, Anthony Olubunmi Cardinal Okogie, on his 59th anniversary in the Catholic priesthood, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most respected moral voices and a symbol of courage, humility, and principled leadership.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Ebojele Akhere Patrick, the Governor said Cardinal Okogie’s decades of service to the Church and the nation remain a model of true devotion. He noted that from his early years as a young priest to his distinguished era as Archbishop of Lagos and later as Cardinal, Okogie has demonstrated uncommon boldness, compassion for the vulnerable, and unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity.
Governor Okpebholo also highlighted the Cardinal’s Edo heritage, calling him “one of Uromi’s finest and a national treasure whose clarity of thought and balanced counsel have shaped public discourse for generations.” He added that the Cardinal has always conveyed even the toughest messages with maturity, grace, and conviction.
He further remarked that Cardinal Okogie’s influence extends far beyond the Church, noting his consistent role as a voice of conscience in national matters. According to the Governor, the Cardinal’s interventions on governance, morality, and unity have served as moral reminders of what is required to build a just and peaceful Nigeria.
Governor Okpebholo thanked God for the Cardinal’s strength and prayed for many more years of sound health, peace, and fulfilment. He called on Nigerians to celebrate the milestone and draw inspiration from his life of sacrifice, discipline, and steadfast faith.
