Monday Okpebholo Cracks Down on Contractors, Orders Rebuild of Substandard Projects at No Cost to Government
Benin City-The Edo State Government has issued a strong directive to contractors handling public infrastructure, warning that any project failing to meet approved quality standards will be rejected and rebuilt at the contractor’s expense.
The warning was delivered by the Special Adviser on Projects Implementation and Monitoring, Williams-Bello Phoebe, during an inspection tour of key road projects in Edo South Senatorial District.

Speaking with journalists, Phoebe emphasized that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo maintains a zero-tolerance stance on substandard work, stressing that only projects executed in line with contractual and engineering specifications will be approved.
According to her, the state has commenced a comprehensive monitoring exercise across Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South to ensure strict compliance with quality standards and uniformity in project execution.
“We want all contractors to understand that this administration is very serious about quality control,” she said. “We have already begun curing processes on roads that have reached pavement level, including binder and wearing courses. There is absolutely no room for substandard delivery.”
Phoebe noted that the initiative is not only about enforcing standards but also about safeguarding public resources and ensuring long-term infrastructure durability for residents.
She further warned that any contractor found delivering substandard work would be compelled to reconstruct the project entirely at their own cost, without any financial burden on the state government.
Addressing contractors whose projects are yet to reach advanced stages, she urged them to adhere strictly to specifications to avoid sanctions.
“We advise contractors to do the right thing before inspection teams arrive. This is not about witch-hunting anyone, but about ensuring that all work meets required standards. Where necessary, we will not hesitate to direct that such work be scarified and redone,” she added.
The government reiterated its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and value-driven infrastructure development, stating that all projects executed under the current administration must be durable and capable of standing the test of time.
The ongoing monitoring exercise forms part of broader efforts by the Okpebholo administration to improve infrastructure delivery and enhance the quality of life for citizens across Edo State.
