Benin City Wins $1m Global Innovation Prize in Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge

Benin City, the Edo State capital, has earned global recognition after emerging among the winners of the prestigious Bloomberg Mayors Challenge, securing a $1 million innovation award.

The highly competitive global contest attracted more than 600 cities from across the world, with only 25 cities in 20 countries making the final list. Benin City was among just four African cities selected, underscoring its growing reputation for innovative governance and practical public policy solutions.

The award places Benin City firmly on the global map of urban innovation, highlighting the city’s ability to develop bold and scalable solutions to critical public challenges, particularly in the area of healthcare delivery.

Reacting to the development, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, described the recognition as a testament to the state government’s commitment to innovation and its ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare systems across the state.

“This recognition reflects the innovation, resilience and dedication of our team in transforming healthcare delivery in Edo State. It proves that bold ideas from Benin City can compete — and win — on the global stage,” the governor said.

Governor Okpebholo commended the Edo State Ministry of Health and the technical team behind the initiative for their hard work and commitment, noting that the award reinforces Edo State’s growing reputation as a centre for forward-thinking governance and impactful public sector reforms.

He also expressed appreciation to the people of Edo State for their continued support for the administration’s programmes and policies aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

“Congratulations to my hardworking team and to the great people of Edo State. The world is watching, and we are just getting started,” he added.

The Bloomberg Mayors Challenge is widely regarded as one of the world’s most competitive platforms for cities to present innovative solutions to urban challenges, with winning cities receiving funding and technical support to implement transformative projects.

The press release is signed by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Edo State.
