Edo Directs Political Appointees, Public Servants to Resign Before Party Primaries

The Edo State Government has directed all public servants, political appointees and government functionaries intending to contest elective positions in the forthcoming electoral cycle to tender their resignation on or before March 1, 2026.

In a special announcement dated February 28, 2026, the government said the directive applies to officers serving in any capacity within the Edo State Public Service who plan to participate in party primaries or any stage of the electoral process.

The government explained that the decision was taken in strict compliance with the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 to prevent aspiring candidates from facing possible disqualification by relevant electoral authorities.

According to the statement, the measure is designed to promote fairness, transparency and a level playing field for all aspirants, while safeguarding the integrity and neutrality of public institutions.

It stressed that the responsibilities of governance must not be compromised by partisan political engagements, urging affected officers to take immediate steps to comply within the stipulated timeline.

The administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed its commitment to constitutionalism, the rule of law and due process in matters relating to governance and political participation.

The directive was signed by Umar Musa Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, who also instructed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to give the notice the widest possible circulation.
