    El-Rufai’s Fundamental Rights Suit Adjourned as FCT Judge Proceeds on Leave

    Proceedings in the fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, were stalled on Wednesday following the withdrawal of the presiding judge at the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

    At the court sitting in Abuja, it was disclosed that Honourable Justice Hussaini Belgore will no longer preside over the matter, having proceeded on official leave. Consequently, the case file has been returned to the Honourable Chief Judge of the FCT High Court for administrative reassignment to another judge.

    The suit seeks judicial enforcement and protection of El-Rufai’s constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights. The application reportedly challenges certain actions allegedly undertaken by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    As a result of the development, the bail hearing earlier scheduled to proceed before Justice Belgore will no longer hold as planned. The matter now remains pending until it is reassigned and a fresh hearing date is fixed by the incoming judge.
    Concerns Over Judicial Delays.

    Reacting to the development, the ADC Coalition, Kaduna Chapter, expressed concern over what it described as recurring procedural disruptions in cases involving constitutional rights.

    In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Darius Kurah, the coalition acknowledged the administrative prerogatives of the judiciary but warned that adjournments and reassignments in sensitive cases contribute to delays and uncertainty.

    According to the group, cases involving the enforcement of fundamental rights require urgent and uninterrupted judicial attention, noting that delays risk undermining public confidence in access to justice.

    While reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and judicial independence, the coalition called for the prompt reassignment of the matter and expedited scheduling of a new hearing date to ensure continuity in proceedings.

    The group also urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the legal process unfolds.
