Gunmen Attack ADC Members in Edo; Obi, Odigie-Oyegun Escape Unhurt

Benin City, Edo State — Armed men on Tuesday attacked members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, disrupting a political gathering and injuring several supporters in an incident that has heightened concerns over political violence in the state.

The attack occurred shortly after the formal reception of former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, into the ADC at the party’s secretariat on Sokponba Road. Eyewitnesses said suspected thugs stormed the venue, firing sporadically and destroying canopies, chairs and other property.

Panic reportedly spread as party faithful scampered for safety. Some supporters sustained injuries in the chaos, although the exact number of casualties remained unclear as of press time.

The assailants were also reported to have advanced toward the residence of former Edo State Governor and ADC national leader, John Odigie-Oyegun, where gunshots were allegedly fired and vehicles damaged.

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, who was said to have attended the earlier event, and Odigie-Oyegun were reportedly in the vicinity during the attack but escaped unharmed.

Police Confirm Incident

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that officers responded swiftly to a distress call from the area. Police authorities said the attackers fled upon sighting security operatives.

A statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer indicated that investigations had commenced and efforts were underway to identify and apprehend those responsible. The police added that security had been reinforced around political venues and key locations in the metropolis to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

ADC Condemns Attack

The state chapter of the ADC condemned the incident, describing it as an assault on democracy and a deliberate attempt to intimidate opposition voices. Party officials called on security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.

In a statement issued by party leaders, the ADC urged the Federal Government and relevant authorities to guarantee the safety of political actors and supporters, warning that unchecked violence could undermine democratic processes.

State Government Reacts

Sources within the Edo State Government said authorities were monitoring developments closely and reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security. Officials denied any link to the violence and called for calm while investigations continue.

Rising Political Tension

The attack comes amid increasing political activities in Edo State ahead of future electoral contests. Observers say the incident underscores the persistent challenge of political thuggery and the urgent need for proactive security measures to safeguard democratic engagement.

As investigations continue, stakeholders across party lines have appealed for restraint and peaceful conduct, stressing that political competition must not degenerate into violence.
