Benin City- The Governor of Edo State, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has formally declared the 2026 Niger Delta Games open in Benin City, describing the tournament as a powerful platform for youth empowerment, regional unity and sustainable development.
Speaking at the colourful opening ceremony of the Games held on Thursday in Benin City, the governor welcomed athletes, officials and guests from across the Niger Delta region, noting that Edo State was honoured to host the landmark sporting event in partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Okpebholo said the Games represent far more than athletic competition, stressing that they symbolise the resilience, talent and vast human potential of the Niger Delta people.
“These Games are a powerful statement that the Niger Delta is not only defined by its resources, but also by its resilience, talent and boundless human potential,” he stated.
The governor underscored the transformative power of sports, describing it as a tool for instilling discipline, building character and fostering unity across cultural and linguistic divides.
“In this tournament, there is no division — only teamwork, excellence and the pursuit of greatness. This is the spirit we must carry beyond this arena into our various communities,” he said.
Addressing the athletes, Okpebholo charged them to compete with passion and integrity, reminding them that they represent the hopes and aspirations of millions of young people across the region.
“You are the pride of the Niger Delta. Let your performance reflect the strength, courage and determination of our people,” he urged.
The governor commended the NDDC for its vision in leveraging sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, regional integration and sustainable peace. He disclosed that when approached to host the second edition of the Games, his administration readily accepted the offer with a commitment to deliver an unforgettable experience for participants.
According to him, the sports fiesta aligns with his administration’s SHINE Agenda, particularly its emphasis on sustainable youth development and meaningful engagement of the state’s youthful population.
“The idea of this tournament is to galvanise the energies of our youths and redirect them towards positive endeavours. No meaningful development can be achieved if the youth, who constitute the majority of our population, are ignored,” he said.
Okpebholo assured participants of a safe, hospitable and conducive environment throughout the duration of the Games, expressing optimism that the event would forge new friendships, inspire fresh dreams and project the true spirit of the Niger Delta to the nation and the world.
“With unity in our hearts and excellence as our goal, it is my honour and privilege to formally declare the 2026 Niger Delta Games open,” the governor proclaimed.
The ceremony was attended by top government functionaries, sports administrators and stakeholders from across the Niger Delta region.
