LABOUR PARTY CONGRATULATES NEW INEC CHAIRMAN, PROF. JOASH AMUPITAN, URGES HIM TO UPHOLD RULE OF LAW
The Labour Party (LP) has extended warm congratulations to the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), describing his elevation as “well-deserved and timely” for the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement personally signed by the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, and addressed to the new INEC Chairman, the party commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making what it called “a patriotic and thoughtful choice,” noting that Prof. Amupitan’s appointment had been widely anticipated by Nigerians who recognize his scholarly achievements, legal brilliance, and integrity.
“I join millions of Nigerians in congratulating you on your well-deserved appointment as INEC Chairman,” Abure stated. “Your track record as a profound scholar, legal luminary, and administrator of repute gives hope that the electoral process will be strengthened under your leadership.”
Abure recalled Prof. Amupitan’s recent Senate screening, praising the new INEC boss for demonstrating deep understanding of Nigeria’s electoral challenges and inspiring confidence through his articulate responses. “You exhibited mastery of the task ahead and held the entire Senate spellbound with your intellectual prowess,” he added.
The Labour Party Chairman further expressed optimism that Prof. Amupitan’s tenure would mark a decisive shift toward credible elections, transparency, and respect for the rule of law. “Nigeria needs an umpire who is apolitical, courageous, and patriotic—someone who will not succumb to blackmail or political manipulation,” Abure said. “You have earned this appointment, and President Tinubu’s faith in you is certainly not misplaced.”
While reiterating that the letter was primarily congratulatory, Abure also used the opportunity to call on the new INEC Chairman to address certain pending issues concerning the Labour Party. He referenced existing court orders affirming his leadership of the party, which he said were disregarded by the immediate past INEC administration.
He, however, commended the former Acting Chairman of INEC for “taking bold steps to correct many wrongs of the past” and urged Prof. Amupitan to build on that foundation by ensuring full compliance with judicial pronouncements.
Abure appealed to the new INEC leadership to “direct the inclusion of the Labour Party and its candidates in the forthcoming FCT Council elections by uploading their names in accordance with court orders.”
“As a respected member of the legal profession and a firm believer in justice, we are confident that you will uphold the rule of law and restore full recognition to the authentic leadership of the Labour Party,” he wrote.
Concluding the letter, Abure prayed for divine wisdom and success for the new INEC Chairman, expressing hope that his tenure would “mark a glorious chapter in the history of Nigeria’s electoral system.”
Signed:
Barr. Julius Abure
National Chairman, Labour Party
