Japa: Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Calls for Incentives To Retain Nigeria’s Doctors

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged all levels of government to give incentives to medical professionals to slow down their mass migration abroad, popularly known as ‘Japa’.

The Former President,Olusegun Obasanjo, at a hospital commissioning in Zamfara on Monday emphasized the pressing need to retain seasoned doctors and healthcare worker within the country

He stated the need to stop the migration of Nigerian medical personnel seeking better opportunities abroad, in order to encourage them staying, hospitals must offer incentives.

The former president stressed that quality healthcare relies not only on infrastructure and equipment but also significantly on human resources.

Obasanjo stated further that effectual hospital delivery requires not just a conducive environment and modern equipment, but also competent and qualified personnel.

His remarks arises in the midst of rising concern over the growing number of Nigerian health professionals leaving the country looking for better pay and working conditions abroad.
