Benin City- The Oba of Benin has extended a congratulatory message to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on his 100th day in office, praising his administration for reversing policies that were detrimental to the Benin traditional institution.

In a letter signed by Chief S. O. Obamwonyi, the Private Secretary to the Oba of Benin, the Royal Court expressed gratitude to the governor for his swift actions in addressing issues that had previously strained the relationship between the traditional institution and the state government.

The letter highlighted the challenges faced under the past administration, including the alleged marginalization of the Benin Traditional Council, attempts to appropriate ancient artifacts belonging to the Oba of Benin, and the creation of Traditional Councils in Edo South in disregard of customary laws. It also referenced the controversial revocation of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Center concession and the annexation of the Central Hospital Ground for the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) project.

The Royal Court commended Governor Okpebholo for immediately reversing these actions, describing his intervention as a watershed moment in the electoral history of Edo State. The letter acknowledged the governor’s commitment to stabilizing traditional institutions and fostering collaboration for peace and development.

Additionally, the Oba of Benin praised the administration’s focus on infrastructure development, particularly the construction of three flyovers in Benin City, as well as investments in roads, schools, and the health sector within the governor’s first three months in office.

The letter concluded with a reaffirmation of support for the governor, stating, The enemy of my friend is my enemy. Akpakomiza is truly Akpakomiza! A traditional phrase signifying loyalty and unity.

With this endorsement from the revered Benin monarchy, Governor Okpebholo’s administration gains a significant boost, strengthening ties between the government and the traditional institution as they work toward the progress of Edo State.
