The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally summoned all 18 suspended Local Government Chairmen in Edo State for investigative interviews in connection with allegations of financial irregularities during their tenure.

In a letter dated December 17, 2024, addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the EFCC stated that the summons was part of an ongoing investigation necessitating clarifications from the chairmen. The letter was signed by the Assistant Chief Executive (ACE II), Dare Folarin, on behalf of the commission.

The invitation detailed the schedule for the chairmen’s appearances at the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate, located at No. 1 High Court Road, G.R.A. Benin City, Edo State. Chairmen of Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North-East, Esan South-East, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Etsako West Local Government Councils are expected to report on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

Meanwhile, the chairmen of Igueben, Ikpoba-Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North-East, Ovia South-West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode Local Government Councils are required to appear on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the same time and venue.

The EFCC directed the chairmen to come with certified true copies of key documents, including records on staff strength, payroll details, and other financial documentation necessary for the investigation.

The letter emphasized the classified nature of the investigation and cautioned against unauthorized disclosure of its contents, which could lead to prosecution under the Official Secrets Act, 1962.

This development comes amidst heightened public interest in governance at the grassroots level, with civil society organizations and residents calling for accountability and transparency in the administration of local governments.

The summons represents another step in the EFCC’s efforts to address corruption and financial mismanagement in public offices, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring public funds are appropriately utilized.

As the investigation progresses, Edo State residents and observers across the nation await the outcome of the EFCC’s probe, which could have far-reaching implications for governance and accountability in the state.
